Nottingham Express Transit network double

The first trams on the two new lines from Clifton and Chilwell began passenger service promptly at 6am. The PTA and local government officials are enthusiastic about the new service which will see trams running every seven minutes along 32 km of lines.

Last year, the NET carried 8 million passengers and with the network extension completed ridership is expected to more than double next year. In order to transport the extra riders, the fleet has been boosted by the arrival of the new Citadis trams and the existing vehicles have been refurbished.

The project has been tendered by Nottingham City Council as a PPP Concession to a consortium that includes Keolis, Wellglade, Vinci, Alstom, and Meridiam Infrastructure. The contract runs for 22 years and 3 months. The launch of the network addition, which more than doubled the size of the system, marked the completion of one of the UK’s largest infrastructure projects in recent times.

The tram now serves 20 of the 30 largest employers in Greater Nottingham as well as key regeneration sites and comes within 800m of nearly 30% of the Greater Nottingham population.
